The best time to visit Desaru
Desaru is warm all year — the real question is the sea and the crowds. Here’s the honest month-by-month: when the water’s calm, when it’s cheapest, and the season to avoid for swimming.
The short answer
Go March to June for the best mix of calm sea and sunshine — May if you want good weather without the peak crowds. Avoid November to February if swimming in the sea matters: that’s the monsoon, when the water turns rough.

Season by season
March – June
Best overall- Sea
- Calm — good for swimming
- Crowds
- Building toward peak
The sweet spot: reliable sun and a calm South China Sea. May is the last quieter month before the school-holiday rush — arguably the single best time to go.
June – August
Peak season- Sea
- Generally calm
- Crowds
- Busiest — school holidays
Great weather, but the most crowded and most expensive — Singapore and Malaysia school holidays overlap here. Book resorts and the waterpark well ahead.
September – October
Quiet shoulder- Sea
- Usually calm
- Crowds
- Lowest of the dry season
Underrated. Decent weather, far fewer people, and lower rates than the mid-year peak — a good pick if you can travel outside the holidays.
November – February
Monsoon- Sea
- Rough — not safe for swimming
- Crowds
- Lowest
The Northeast Monsoon brings the heaviest rain (December averages ~353 mm) and a rough sea unsafe for swimming. The upside: accommodation is at its cheapest, and resort and waterpark pools still run.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best month to visit Desaru?
March to June is the best window — calm seas and reliable sunshine. May in particular is a sweet spot: good weather just before the June–August school-holiday peak, so fewer crowds and lower prices.
Does it rain a lot in Desaru?
Desaru is tropical, so short showers can happen any time, but rainfall is far from even. The heaviest rain is during the Northeast Monsoon (roughly November–February), with December the wettest month (~353 mm). February is typically the driest (~139 mm).
Can you swim at Desaru during the monsoon?
In the open sea, no — between about November and February the South China Sea here gets rough and is generally unsafe for swimming. Resort pools and the Adventure Waterpark still operate, so a monsoon trip can still work if you’re happy to stay poolside.
When is Desaru cheapest?
Accommodation is at its lowest during the monsoon months (November–February), because the beach weather is poor. If you mainly want resort facilities and pools rather than the sea, that’s when you’ll find the best rates.
