Where to stay in Desaru
Four big resorts sit inside the gated Desaru Coast — and there’s a whole cheaper Desaru outside them. Here’s how they actually differ, and which fits your trip.
Almost everyone means the same four resorts when they say “Desaru” — the Westin, Hard Rock, Anantara and One&Only, all inside the master-planned Desaru Coast. They’re genuinely good, but they’re not interchangeable, and they’re not your only option. We rank them for a first family trip below — then point you to the cheaper stays the official site won’t mention.
Inside the gates — the 4 Coast resorts
Listed in the order we’d recommend them for a family.
The Westin Desaru Coast Resort
PremiumInside Desaru Coast· kids’ club
The big, dependable family-and-wellness pick inside the gates. 275 rooms and suites along a private South China Sea beachfront, with the Heavenly Spa, a kids’ club for roughly ages 4–12, and Westin’s signature comfort. It’s the resort most Singapore families default to — and for a first trip with kids, that default is usually right.
- · 275 rooms & suites with sea or garden views
- · Direct private beachfront on the South China Sea
- · Heavenly Spa by Westin
≈ SGD 270–650 / night (indicative; varies by season & room — check live rates)
Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast
Mid-RangeInside Desaru Coast· kids’ club
The family-fun, best-value end of the four. The Roxity Kids Club runs long hours, it’s the closest hotel to the Adventure Waterpark — with its own guest entrance and complimentary access — and packages often bundle a waterpark ticket. If the trip is mainly about keeping kids happy, this is the obvious pick.
- · Roxity Kids Club (long daily hours)
- · Closest hotel to Adventure Waterpark — exclusive guest entrance
- · Complimentary waterpark access for guests (verify with your rate)
≈ SGD 270–550 / night (indicative; the most affordable of the four — check live rates)
Anantara Desaru Coast Resort & Villas
LuxuryInside Desaru Coast· kids’ club
The spa-luxury middle ground: quieter than Hard Rock, less adults-only than One&Only. Sells both hotel rooms and villas with private plunge pools, and still keeps a kids’ and teens’ club in the next garden — so you can have a grown-up villa weekend without ruling kids out.
- · Hotel rooms plus pool villas with private plunge pools
- · Layang-Layang kids’ club + teens’ club (soft play, consoles)
- · Anantara spa
≈ SGD 300–800 / night (indicative; villas higher — check live rates)
One&Only Desaru Coast
LuxuryInside Desaru Coast
The luxury anchor of the development, and deliberately adult-leaning — this is not a kids’-club property. Villas with private pools, a serious restaurant line-up and a hushed, grown-up atmosphere. Pick it for a couples’ escape, not a family beach holiday.
- · Private-pool villas
- · Adults-leaning, quiet atmosphere (no kids’ club)
- · Premium dining
Ultra-luxury — typically the priciest of the four (check live rates)
Quick pick
Travelling with young kids
Hard Rock for value + the waterpark, or the Westin for a calmer, wellness-leaning family stay.
A couples’ escape
One&Only for quiet adults-only luxury, or Anantara for a villa with a plunge pool.
On a budget
Skip the gates — stay at a homestay or budget hotel near Pantai Desaru and visit the beach for free.
Outside the gates (the cheaper Desaru)
The official Desaru Coast site only sells you the four resorts — but plenty of people visit Desaru without ever booking one. Around Pantai Desaru and the nearby villages you’ll find homestays, guesthouses and budget hotels at a fraction of the resort rate. You give up the private resort beach and the kids’ clubs, but the public beach is free and the local seafood is better value.
Lotus Desaru Beach Resort & Spa
Bandar Penawar (older Desaru beach strip)
from ≈ SGD 60 / night (indicative; check live rates)
The budget-friendly beachfront pick on the older Desaru strip, a few kilometres up from the Coast gates. There’s an outdoor pool, a small splash park and sea-sports (jet-ski, parasailing), and the family suites come with kitchenettes — handy for a longer self-catering stay. You give up the polish and the kids’ club of the Coast resorts, but you pay a fraction of the rate and the public beach is on your doorstep.
Best for: Self-catering families on a budget
Tunamaya Beach & Spa Resort – Desaru
Bandar Penawar (≈ 5 min drive to the public beach & waterpark)
from ≈ SGD 130 / night (indicative; check live rates)
The closest thing to a Coast-style resort feel without the Coast price — a 4-star beachfront property with a large pool and spacious, clean rooms and suites. About a five-minute drive from the public beach and the Adventure Waterpark, so it pairs well with a waterpark day without paying for a Hard Rock package.
Best for: Families who want resort comfort for less
Sand & Sandals Desaru Beach Resort & Spa
formerly Pulai Desaru
Bandar Penawar (older Desaru beach strip)
from ≈ SGD 75 / night (indicative; check live rates)
A long-standing beachfront resort (you’ll still see it listed under its old name, Pulai Desaru) with garden, sea-view and pool rooms plus larger loft and suite options for bigger families. Older and simpler than the Coast resorts, but right on the sand and consistently among the cheaper beachfront beds in Desaru.
Best for: Bigger families wanting a beachfront room

Frequently asked questions
Which Desaru resort is best for families?
For families with young kids, Hard Rock Hotel (best value, long-hours kids’ club, closest to the waterpark) and The Westin (wellness-leaning, balanced family option) are the two to choose between. Anantara works if you want villa luxury but still a kids’ club next door. One&Only is adults-leaning and not a kids’-club resort.
Can you stay in Desaru without booking a Coast resort?
Yes. Outside the gated Desaru Coast development there are homestays, guesthouses and budget hotels around Pantai Desaru and the surrounding villages — usually a fraction of the resort price. You trade the private resort beach and facilities for cost and a more local feel.
