Where to eat in Desaru
Desaru means seafood — and the best of it is outside the resort gates. Here’s where the lobster and crab are actually worth it, plus an honest word on resort dining and halal.
The photo above is illustrative — a representative seafood plate, not a specific Desaru restaurant.
The official Desaru Coast story is resort restaurants. The honest one is that Desaru’s real food culture is fresh seafood, and most of it sits outside the gates — in the village restaurants and the spots behind the public beach, where it’s fresher, cheaper and more fun. Here’s where we’d send you.
The seafood worth leaving the resort for
Super Lobster Village
The crowd-pleaser — a big wooden longhouse done up like a fishing village, and a Malaysia Top Gourmet Award (2022) name. Lobster and crab are the draw; go hungry and in a group.
Jade Garden Seafood Corner
Straightforward, fresh, and priced by the season for lobster and crab. Less theatre than Super Lobster, more about the seafood itself.
Rhu / Lotus Seafood Restaurant
Inside the Lotus Desaru Beach Resort — a mix of Chinese, Malay, Thai and Western. The Tom Yum seafood is the one people come back for.
Nelayan Seafood By The Coast
Fusion seafood with a sea view — the spot for a slower, scenic dinner rather than a fast feast.
Restoran Terapung Seafood Bujang Firefly
A floating seafood restaurant over the Sungai Lebam — as much for the setting (and the evening fireflies) as the food. Book ahead.
Seafood is priced by season and weight — confirm prices before ordering, especially for lobster and crab. Names and details last checked May 2026.
Eating inside Desaru Coast
If you’re based inside the gates, the Westin, Anantara and Hard Rock each have their own restaurants, plus the riverside retail strip — convenient and family-friendly, but you pay resort prices and miss the local character. Our take: eat in once for ease, then get out to the village seafood at least once.
Frequently asked questions
Is Desaru good for seafood?
Yes — fresh seafood is the local food scene, especially lobster and crab. The best-value, most characterful spots are outside the Desaru Coast gates, in and around the public beach and the fishing villages, not inside the resorts.
Are there halal food options in Desaru?
Yes, but check per place. Desaru’s seafood restaurants are a mix — some are Chinese-style (often non-halal), others Malay or Muslim-friendly. The resorts inside Desaru Coast have halal dining options. If halal matters, confirm with the specific restaurant before you go.
Where do you eat if you’re staying inside Desaru Coast?
The Westin, Anantara and Hard Rock all have their own restaurants within walking distance of each other, which is convenient but pricier. For the local seafood experience, it’s worth a short drive or Grab out to the village restaurants.
