Exploring Desaru — how much I spent, what I ate, café hopping

Source: Mavis Vlogs on YouTube · embedded, not re-hosted

Watch this if you want the relaxed, outside-the-resort Desaru — surfing, cafés and fireflies — rather than a pools-and-buffet resort weekend.

What’s in it

  • Came mainly to surf: beginner lessons run about two hours, instructor-led in small groups, with a board and wetsuit provided — you wait for the right set.
  • The surf beach is roughly a 15-minute walk in from where Grab drops you — drivers don’t always go all the way to the sand.
  • Stayed at a budget beachfront-view place and was refreshingly honest that the “Sea View” room wasn’t actually by the sea — picked for value, not the view.
  • Did the Sungai Lebam firefly river cruise in the evening (booked on Klook) — a covered boat through the mangroves after dark.
  • Café-hopped outside the gates: Comma Bakes (toffee-nut latte, truffle carbonara) and Yard & Co for brunch (the lobster roll).
  • Seafood dinner beside the resort — XO fried rice, scallop hot plate, sweet-and-sour tofu — and used Grab to get around all weekend.

Our take: The best look at the outside-the-gates Desaru — surf, fireflies and cafés — and honest about budget and what a “sea view” really means.
